Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition from reproductive years to menopause, and begins for many women in their early 40’s.  In a nutshell, our ovaries start the “sputtering process” before they come to a halt, changing our hormones and thus, changing our experience. We are passionate about educating and assisting women through this time. It’s an important, complex, powerful time in a woman’s journey and sets the stage for the years ahead.

The symptoms of perimenopause vary from woman to woman and from early stages to later stages.  Symptoms generally intensify in the second half of the cycle.

Some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Worsening of PMS symptoms
  • Mood changes, fatigue
  • Unexplained anxiety, changes in the way you react to stress and
  • a feeling of being overwhelmed more easily
  • Foggy headed
  • Sleep changes
  • Increased headaches
  • Changes in libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular cycles, missed cycles
  • Heavy bleeding

How we can help:

Knowing you are not alone is a start point. Physically, mentally and emotionally things are changing and you are being called upon to pay attention and find some time for self care. We take a good look at the whole you and determine what other factors may be influencing your female hormones and your experience. We will educate you on what is happening in your body and use the appropriate treatments to help you restore balance. For some women, this is acupuncture, herbal medicines and lifestyle counseling. For other women we will begin the conversation about the use of bioidentical progesterone.  There are many options. Naturopathic medicine has much to offer women in these interesting, changing, growth filled years.
